The Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, formerly known as the Laurenziana Library, is one of the world’s most important manuscript collections and a major architectural complex in Florence. Designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1519 and 1534, it stands as a masterpiece of Renaissance and Mannerist architecture. Among its most significant spaces, the Vestibule serves not only as a transition between the entrance and the reading room but also as a striking example of Michelangelo’s architectural innovation.
The stained-glass windows of the Vestibule, an architectural masterpiece designed by Michelangelo, were created between 1558 and 1568 by Flemish artisans based on drawings by Giorgio Vasari. Decorated using the grisaille technique and assembled with lead profiles within a metal frame, these fragile elements required a conservation intervention to ensure their long-term protection while preserving their original aesthetic. In 2003, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure initiated an extensive restoration project aimed at preserving their integrity.
Goppion’s Contribution
As part of the restoration process, the original stained-glass panels were fully dismantled and carefully cleaned using water, alcohol, and, in some cases, ammonium carbonate. To ensure structural stability and security, all lead profiles and metal frames were replaced.
Goppion played a key role in this conservation effort, designing and manufacturing custom protective glass frames to shield the restored windows from environmental elements while ensuring a completely sealed enclosure. These panels, made from laminated glass, were mounted on inward-opening hinged frames, providing access to the original windows without compromising their stability and ensuring effective protection from environmental factors. Each window was measured individually to achieve a perfect integration with the historic architecture. The project required exceptional precision and airtight solutions, presenting a significant technical challenge successfully met by our expert team.
A Lasting Intervention
The new frames, seamlessly incorporated into the historic setting, provide a dual benefit: they protect the stained-glass windows while ensuring their long-term conservation, all while respecting the original character and artistic integrity of the space. This intervention is a testament to Goppion’s commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage through innovative, tailor-made solutions.
